After his death, Eric lands in the spirit world in an area that looks like a forest, and Eric looks through the brush yelling Shelly’s name. Eric comes across a long bridge above a river. He sees Shelly on the other side of the bridge and they run towards each other and share a hug. Shelly tells Eric that they’re in the land of the dead. Eric apologies to Shelly, and Shelly says that being together is all that matters. Eric tells Shelly that the crow led him to her. Shelly tells Eric that the crow will give Eric a second chance and tells him to set things right before disappearing. Although Eric gives chase, Shelly is already gone. Eric then watches the crow fly below the bridge before completely vanishing. Eric falls from the bridge and vanishes.
Meanwhile, back in the world of the living, there are a group of people having a party to celebrate halloween. The crow flies upon a stand, and just then, Eric’s spirit, returning to the land of the living, falls from the sky and into a puddle in the middle of the party much to the shock of the party goers. When Eric wakes up, a man in a familiar looking costume approaches him. The man says that Eric has crossed worlds between death and life.
The following morning, Sarah brings flowers to Shelly’s grave. Sarah tells Shelly that she hates the people who killed her, and she hates talking to graves even more. Albrecht approaches Sarah saying if only the graves would talk back, and Sarah tells Albrecht to stop following her. Albrecht tells Sarah that she should be in school and she tells him that there are no classes as it’s a national holiday; Halloween. Albrecht tells Sarah that Halloween would be a national holiday if she was mayor and she agrees. Albrecht offers to give her a ride, and Sarah tells Albrecht that she would rather stay at the graves and feel sorry for herself. Albrecht tells her she has five more minutes and he’ll be waiting for her in the car. Sarah proceeds to place flowers at Eric’s grave, and a crow lands on Eric’s grave.
As Eric walks on the streets of Detroit he sees a man physically pushing a woman yelling at her to get in his car. Eric approaches the man and tells her that the woman is afraid of her and the man tells Eric that he’s the one who should be afraid, and he pushes Eric. Eric pushes him back into his own car. The two men engage in a fight, and while the other man is one the ground, Eric instructs the woman to leave, and she gets in the car and drives away. The man asks who Eric is and Eric tells the man he’s nobody just like him before walking away.
While driving Sarah to school, Albrecht questions her on how her mother is doing, but before she can answer, Albrecht spots Tin Tin and pulls over. Albrecht gets out of the car while instructing Sarah to stay put and questions Tin Tin on his Halloween plans. Tin Tin tells Albrecht that he has nothing to say to him but Albrecht is sure that that’s not true, saying that Tin Tin must have a lot to say as he’s a smart man. Tin Tin says that he’s not smart at all and tells Albrecht to ask anybody. Albrecht frisks Tin Tin who assures Albrecht that he’s not caring a weapon. When Albrecht finds that he’s caring a chain, Tin Tin tells him it’s a fashion statement. When Albrecht continues to question Tin Tin, Tin Tin says his lawyer told him not to speak to Albrecht. Albrecht goes on to tell Tin Tin that Eric and Shelly didn’t deserve to die the way they did while Sarah watches on and smiles. Tin Tin dismisses Albrecht saying that Eric and Shelly died of a year ago and that Albrecht has no right to harass him and Tin Tin walks off. Albrecht tells Tin Tin to think about it, because when he solves the case, Tin Tin will be helping the good guys, and Sarah shakes her head.
Meanwhile, Eric head’s to Gideon’s Pawn Shop and spots a guitar in the window, and briefly has a flashback of Shelly. Gideon approaches Eric and tells him that he can’t afford it. Eric continues to have flashbacks of Shelly while Gideon proceeds to tell Eric that he has a different guitar inside his shop.
Eric is remembering Shelly filming him while he plays a song for her. After he’s finished, Shelly tells him that the song was beautiful. Shelly asks Eric if he ever played it for his band and he tells her that he hasn’t and that he didn’t even write it down as he has it in his memory just for Shelly. Shelly tells Eric that she had been searching for a soul as pure and brave as Eric’s.
Meanwhile T-Bird and his gang are watching a video tape of Eric and Shelly together. They continue watching the tape when they storm in and Funboy turns the camera off. Top Dollar turns off the tape and tells Funboy that when he referred to one of the men by name that was his first mistake. Funboy acknowledges it and tells Top Dollar that they already went over this. Top Dollar tells the group that they’re going to go over it again saying that they were supposed to stage Eric’s death to make it look like a suicide but instead the police are able to tell that Eric and Shelly’s deaths were a double homicide. Top Dollar threatens them, saying that if there are any more screwups such as this then their heads would be among the collection of souvenirs that they have gotten from the previous jobs. Top Dollar urges them to have fun but tells them that he expects a certain degree of professionalism. T-Bird says that it’s been a year since then and they haven’t made any mistakes since. Tin Tin reveals that Albrecht is still on to him and Top Dollar suggests that they kill Albrecht. Top Dollar tells Tin Tin to tell Albrecht that he’s ready to tell him about the other men involved in Eric and Shelly’s murders and set up a meeting and Tin Tin agrees.
Eric returns to his old apartment which has remained untouched since the previous year. He wanders around and finds a picture of him and Shelly and he begins to have flashbacks of his and Shelly’s murders. In a fury, Eric starts to thrash around in anguish. When he looks in the mirror he sees Shelly, but when he turns around, Shelly is not there. In a rage, Eric punches the mirror and breaks it, cutting his hand, but the cuts on his hand heal themselves and Eric starts to cry blood.
Later that night, Eric, having donned himself in black, returns to Gideon’s Pawn Shop. He knocks on the door and Gideon tells him to go away. Eric breaks through the glass and unlocks the door and Gideon pulls a gun, telling Eric that he owes Gideon a new window. Eric grabs the guitar he spotted earlier and asks Gideon where he got it and Gideon tells him the Home Shopping Network. When asking why does Eric care, Eric tells Gideon that he wants what’s his and that he wants his life. Gideon tells him that he doesn’t sell life, and Eric tells him he trades in death. Gideon thanks him for his opinion. When Gideon gets ready to shoot Eric, Eric quickly subdues him and forces Gideon’s head on to the guitar and tells him to take a closer look. Gideon then reveals that the guitar previously to belonged to a musician. When Eric let’s go of Gideon, he rummages through his rings and finds Shelly’s ring and again starts to have flashbacks. Eric asks Gideon how much does he want for the ring, and Gideon points a gun at Eric and tells him that he’s really starting to get on his nerves. Eric tells Gideon to give him the ring and Gideon shoots Eric in the stomach, telling him he forgot to say “trick or treat“. The bullet wound heals itself much to Gideon’s horror, and Eric tells Gideon to give him the gun and he won’t kill him and Gideon complies. Gideon tells Eric that he can’t help him. Eric demands to know the names of Gideon suppliers and Gideon tells him; T-Bird, Tin Tin and Funboy and Eric demands to know where they are.
Meanwhile, Darla is at home, and Funboy has locked himself in a bedroom and Darla is knocking on the door. Funboy is drinking heavily, while Tin Tin and T-Bird load up their weapons. Darla is still knocking on the door and tells Funboy that Tin Tin and T-Bird have to leave and she starts smoking a cigarette. T-Bird informs Tin Tin and Funboy that Gideon’s pawnshop was trashed. T-Bird tells Funboy to stay at home and get control of Darla, and he tries to hand Tin Tin a gun who rejects it as he has his chain. T-Bird tells Tin Tin that he doesn’t want to take chances with Albrecht. When Sarah arrives home, Darla is still knocking on the door prompting Sarah to question if Darla has company. Darla is about to hand Sarah money so she can buy candy when Funboy exits the room asking if Darla wants to get smacked. Sarah sarcastically tells Funboy that he’s wearing a nice costume before taking the money and walking away. Funboy snatches the cigarette out of Darla’s mouth telling her smoking is a nasty habit. Sarah looks back once before leaving.
Later, Albrecht was talking to Tin Tin, agreeing to meet him alone. He calls up his girlfriend Cordelia and tells her that one of Eric and Shelly’s killers wants to make a deal, but he assures her that he’ll meet up with her later before leaving.
While at home, Funboy’s playing with his gun when a crow flies in through the window. He pretends to shoot the bird who flies into a different room and Darla tells Funboy to get rid of it. While he’s searching the house for the bird, Eric appears hanging from the ceiling. Eric quickly disarms Funboy and subdues him, telling him he has a message for the rest of his gang. Eric tells Funboy that the crow is coming for them. Eric threatens Funboy, telling him to run for his life while he still has one and Funboy takes off running much to Darla’s confusion. Eric then approaches Darla, telling her “Mother is the name for God in the hearts and minds of all children”, and assures Darla that he won’t hurt her and he puts his hands on Darla’s head, showing her that her actions are hurting Sarah. Eric tells Darla that Sarah doesn’t hate her, only her self destructive behavior and he leaves.
Meanwhile, Funboy meets up with Tin Tin and Funboy informs Tin Tin of what Eric told him and Tin Tin just mocks him. He questions where T-Bird is and just then Eric appears. Eric engages the two of them in a fight and quickly defeats them. Just then, T-Bird shoots Eric and is backed up by two men. The three men shoot Eric and he collapses on the ground. T-Bird and his men leave saying that they’ll kill Albrecht at another time. As Eric lays on the ground he’s approached by Shelly’s spirit who rouses his spirit. Albrecht arrives on the scene and reports the shooting.
Back at Eric and Shelly’s old apartment, Sarah is sleeping on the floor surrounded by lite candles. Sarah is awakened by someone trying get into the apartment. She tells the individual that she has a gun and she’s not afraid to use it. Just then Eric breaks down the door and collapses on the floor much to Sarah’s shock.
The next morning, Albrecht is investigating the shooting from the previous night. Albrecht spots a chain that belonged to Tin Tin. When his partner asks why can’t the bad guys have real names, Albrecht refers to Tin Tin by his real name Mike Tremayne. Just then, Albrecht gets a call from Sarah’s school, and assures them that he will have her there by third period. When he gets off the phone, the lieutenant asks if Albrecht has trouble at home and he says that he’ll take care of it. When lieutenant asks Albrecht what makes him think that the shooting was nothing more than target practice, Albrecht tells him that he saw someone moving that he thought was the shooter. He also brings up ashes that he found but the lieutenant just dismisses it. Albrecht tells his lieutenant that he doesn’t have a theory and the lieutenant tells him to get one.
Meanwhile, Sarah is watching over Eric as he sleeps. Sarah wants Eric to say something so that she knows that she’s not dreaming. Sarah is startled when Eric suddenly snaps awake. Eric greets Sarah who asks if Shelly is okay. Eric tells Sarah that he thought that he saw her and that Sarah isn’t the only one who thinks she’s dreaming. Sarah asks Eric how could he be alive when he died a year ago. Eric tell Sarah that there’s a whole bunch of questions he doesn’t even know the answers to and Sarah apologizes. Sarah asks if Eric is an angel now and Eric tells Sarah that he doesn’t believe so. Sarah tells him that she believes he is. Eric then tells Sarah that one of his killers was at her mother’s apartment and asks if she knows who he is. She identifies him as Funboy. As they continue talking, Albrecht knocks on the door. Sarah quickly tells Eric that Albrecht is a cop that was working on Eric‘s case, and she assures Eric that she’ll come back after she lets Albrecht drop her off at school. Sarah hurries out of the apartment leaving Albrecht curious as to why she‘s in such a hurry, and Sarah says that she’ll be late for early lunch. Albrecht wonders what Sarah is hiding and enters the apartment as Sarah tries but fails to stop him. When Albrecht spots Eric he holds him at gunpoint, not initially recognizing him. As soon as Eric emerges from the shadows, Albrecht immediately recognizes him. When Sarah tries to approach Eric, Albrecht keeps her back telling her to go to school and Eric motions for Sarah to leave and she complies. Still holding Eric at gunpoint, Albrecht questions him asking him if he really is Eric Draven, and Eric confirms that he is and Albrecht says that they need to talk.
Albrecht brings Eric to the police station and starts to question him, asking if he really is Eric Draven then where has he been and Eric says he doesn’t now. Albrecht assumes that Eric is choosing not to answer and Eric says that “I don’t know” was his answer. Albrecht tells Eric he’s going to need specific answers such as the names and numbers of people who can corroborate his story and Eric says that he has no story and that he’s not trying to convince Albrecht of anything. When Eric tells him he’s not even sure what day it is, Albrecht tells Eric that it’s exactly one year and one day since Eric was supposedly murdered. When asking Eric if that surprises him, Eric tells him that nothing surprises him. Albrecht goes into detail about how the man was thrown out of a 16th floor window and he asked Eric if he knows who that man was and Eric confirms that the man was him. Albrecht says if that was possible then Eric wouldn’t be sitting in front of him. Albrecht then proceeds with the questioning.
Meanwhile, Sarah is skating on the road when her path is blocked by T-Bird. T-Bird tells Sarah that they were never at her home and she should remember that. Sarah tells him that he has much bigger problems than her talking to the cops as the man that they thought they killed is actually still alive. T-Bird grabs Sarah and prevents her from leaving.
T-Bird brings Sarah to Top Dollar, and informs him that Sarah believes that Eric is still alive. Top Dollar dismisses her and Sarah calls them losers and tries to walk away but T-Bird prevents her from leaving. Unbeknownst to them they are being watched by the crow. Top Dollar instructs T-Bird to put Sarah in the “museum” with the rest of the souvenirs.
Back at the police station, Eric tries to leave when he realizes Sarah is in danger but Albrecht prevents him from leaving. Eric forces Albrecht aside, and tries to leave but the door is locked. Albrecht tells Eric that it took Shelly thirty one hours to die and that the last word she uttered was Eric‘s name. Albrecht says his job is to bring justice and he’ll do whatever he has to. Eric gets angry and shoves Albrecht against a wall and informs Albrecht that T-Bird, Funboy and Tin Tin are Shelly Webster’s killers. Albrecht tells Eric to be careful as it makes it look like he’s pointing the finger. Eric says he’s done talking. Albrecht tells Eric that he knows about his temper and insinuates that Eric lost his temper the night Shelly died. Eric warns Albrecht to leave him alone and Albrecht asks if he doesn’t will Eric kill him too. Albrecht tells Eric that if he confesses to Shelly’s murder then that can make the difference between life and death for him. Just then, Albrecht is informed that the lieutenant wants to speak with him immediately. Although not wanting to, Albrecht complies and leaves the interrogation room.
The lieutenant informs Albrecht that he knows that he reopened Eric‘s case and Albrecht corrects him by saying that he never actually closed it. The lieutenant asks Albrecht who he was interrogating and Albrecht says the man might be Eric Draven one of the victims. When the lieutenant questions Albrecht further, Albrecht suggests that they should exhume Eric‘s grave. When the Lieutenant asks for a possible motive, Albrecht says that it could’ve been a crime of passion. The Lieutenant suggest that he talk to Eric himself but when they both go back into the interrogation room Eric is gone. However Eric was actually hiding on the ceiling. When the men leave Eric sneaks out of the building. He steals a motorcycle and rides off.
Later that night, Eric heads to a club and finds T-Bird. He confronts T-Bird and throws him through a glass door. He confronts Top Dollar asking why Top Dollar killed Shelly. Top Dollar simply says that Shelly was hot before engaging Top Dollar in a fight. When Eric subdues top dollar he asks the question again but just then T-Bird stabs Eric from behind. Top Dollar drags Eric to his “Museum” where Sarah was tied up, and Eric forces Top Dollar to absorb Shelly’s pain causing Top Dollar to collapse. Eric makes sure that Sarah is okay, and Sarah tells Eric that he and Shelly aren’t the only ones he’s killed. Eric unties Sarah and forces her to leave the room. Eric grabs Top Dollar and asks again why Shelly was killed. Top Dollar says that someone wanted Shelly’s boyfriend dead. As Eric prepares to kill Top Dollar, Sarah, who’s sitting in the window, says that she would kill him too but Shelly woundn’t. Just then, Eric lets Top Dollar go leaving him on the ground gasping for air. Eric absorbs the pain from the objects he touches from Top Dollar’s other victims and transfers it to Top Dollar. Sarah tells Eric that he doesn’t know why he came back but he’s glad that he did. Eric goes on to tell Sarah that his soul can’t rest until it sets things right. They both leave while Top Dollar convulses on the floor.
The next morning, Sarah is at home with her mother Darla, who is sitting at the kitchen table drinking coffee. She asks her mother what’s in her coffee, and Darla tells her that she’s just drinking coffee. When Sarah asks if Darla’s trying to get her act together she says that she is, and that she needs Sarah‘s help, but Sarah dismisses her telling her that she was never good at holding hands. Darla says that if she’s going to get her act together, Sarah has to start going back to school. She gives Sarah a bag lunch that she made, and Sarah hands it back when she realizes it’s peanut butter and jelly saying she’s not in kindergarten. However when Darla gets ready to throw it out, Sarah tells her that she’ll eat it and she takes the bag lunch. She heads out for school while telling Darla to not show up to any PTA meetings.
Meanwhile, Albrecht and a graveyard worker exhume Eric’s coffin. They open it, and much to their shock it’s empty. The worker asks Albrecht if this is supposed to be a joke. Albrecht says that if it is he’s not in on it.
Later that night Eric is sitting in his old apartment playing the guitar as it starts to rain.
